Optical splitter equipment

An optical splitter is connected upstream to an Optical Line Terminal (OLT) or central office equipment and downstream to multiple Optical Network Terminals (ONTs) or end-user devices.

Upstream Connection

The input side of an optical splitter is typically connected to the Optical Line Terminal (OLT) located at the service provider's central office or main distribution frame.

The OL

T sends a single optical signal into the splitter, which then distributes it to multiple outputs without requiring any active power source, as the splitter is a passive device.

Downstream Connection

The output fibers of the splitter connect to multiple Optical Network Terminals (ONTs) or end-user devices at homes, offices, or other customer premises. This allows a single fiber from the OLT to serve many users efficiently, often using split ratios like 1: 32 or 1: 64 depending on network design and user density.

Intermediate Distribution

In some network configurations, especially in larger or rural areas, cascaded splitters are used. The primary splitter receives the signal from the OLT and distributes it to secondary splitters, which then connect to ONTs. This hierarchical setup helps manage optical loss and optimize fiber usage.

Installation Context

Optical splitters are often housed in fiber distribution boxes, patch panels, or outdoor enclosures. They can be installed in central offices, street cabinets, or utility poles, depending on the network layout. The compact design allows them to interface seamlessly with both upstream OLTs and downstream ONTs.

In summary, an optical splitter acts as a passive distribution hub, connecting the central office or OLT upstream to multiple ONTs or end-user devices downstream, enabling efficient signal distribution in Passive Optical Networks like FTTH, GPON, or EPON.
