How to use a spectrometer for refraction testing

A spectrometer can measure the refractive index of a prism by determining the minimum deviation angle of light passing through it.

Equipment and Setup

To perform refraction testing, you need a prism spectrometer, which typically includes a collimator, prism table, and telescope. The collimator produces a parallel beam of light from a slit illuminated by a source such as a mercury or cadmium lamp. The prism is placed on the prism table with its apex facing the collimator, and the telescope is used to observe the refracted light.

Calibration

Focus the telescope: Adjust the eyepiece until the crosshairs are sharp for your unaccommodated eye. Focus on a distant object to ensure the telescope is set for parallel rays. Focus the collimator: Adjust the slit and collimator lens so the slit appears sharp in the telescope, producing a parallel beam.

Level the prism table: Use the adjusting screws to ensure the prism table plane is parallel to the axes of the collimator and telescope.

Measurement Procedure

Position the prism: Place the prism with its apex toward the collimator. Illuminate one polished face with the collimated light. Find minimum deviation: Rotate the prism table until the slit image reverses direction.

The position where the image just reverses is the minimum deviation angle (D). Align the telescope: Rotate the telescope to center the slit image on the crosshairs. Record the angular readings using the spectrometer's Vernier scale.

Repeat for different wavelengths: Use spectral lines from the lamp to measure deviation angles for multiple wavelengths, allowing determination of the refractive index as a function of wavelength.

Calculating Refractive Index

The refractive index n of the prism is calculated using the apex angle (A) and the minimum deviation angle (D) with the formula: n=sin(A+D2)sin(A2) This formula applies for each wavelength measured, enabling the creation of a dispersion curve showing how the refractive index varies with wavelength.

Tips for Accuracy

Ensure the prism faces are polished and the apex angle is measured precisely. Use a stable light source with discrete spectral lines for calibration. Take multiple readings and average them to reduce errors.

For liquids, a hollow prism with plane-parallel glass can be used to measure refractive indices. By following these steps, a spectrometer can accurately determine the refractive index of solids or liquids and provide insight into the material's optical properties.
