Measuring multimode fiber optic cables with a light pen

A visual fault locator (VFL) or light pen can be used to check continuity, locate breaks, and verify polarity in multimode fiber optic cables.

Tools Required

To measure multimode fiber cables effectively, you need: Visual Fault Locator (VFL) / Light Pen: Emits visible red light to trace fibers, detect breaks, bends, or poor connections, and verify continuity and polarity in multimode fibers (850/1300 nm) as well as single-mode fibers. Optical Power Meter and Light Source: For quantitative measurements of insertion loss and power levels, ensuring the fiber can support the intended application. Launch and Receive Cables: Reference cables of the same fiber type and connector to connect the source and meter to the cable under test.

Cleaning Supplies: To clean connector end faces and mating adapters before testing, preventing contamination that can affect readings.

Procedure

Prepare Equipment: Turn on the VFL or light source and allow it to warm up. Clean all connectors and adapters. Set Reference: If using a power meter, establish a 0 dB reference with a known good launch cable.

Connect the Fiber: Attach the launch cable to the source and the receive cable to the meter. Connect both to the multimode fiber under test. Visual Inspection: Use the VFL to inject visible light into the fiber.

Observe the fiber for light leakage at bends, breaks, or faulty connectors. A continuous light indicates proper continuity. Measure Loss: With a power meter, measure the optical power at the far end and calculate insertion loss.

Compare against the expected loss budget for the fiber plant, which accounts for fiber, splices, and connectors. Polarity Check: The VFL can also confirm correct fiber pair connections, ensuring transmit and receive ends are properly aligned.

Considerations

Wavelength Selection: Multimode fibers typically use 850 nm and 1300 nm LEDs for testing. Connector Types: Ensure the VFL or adapters match the fiber connectors (LC, SC, ST, MPO, etc.),. Safety: Always follow eye safety standards; visible light from VFLs is generally safe, but avoid direct eye exposure.

Documentation: Record measured loss, continuity, and polarity results for network verification and troubleshooting. Using a light pen in combination with a power meter allows both qualitative fault detection and quantitative performance measurement, making it an essential method for testing multimode fiber optic cables in data centers, enterprise networks, and field installations.
