Dedicated grounding electrode for distribution boxes

Distribution boxes must be grounded using properly sized and installed electrodes, bonded into a unified system, with a maximum resistance of 25 ohms to ensure safety and compliance.

Electrode Types and Materials

Rod Electrodes: Stainless steel, copper, or zinc-coated steel, minimum diameter 5/8 inch (15. 87 mm), minimum length 8 feet, fully in contact with soil for the entire length. Pipe or Conduit Electrodes: Minimum trade size 3/4 inch (metric designator 21), made of approved conductive metals.

Plate Electrodes: Minimum surface area 2 square feet, buried at least 30 inches deep. Prohibited Materials: Aluminum, underground gas piping, or metallic parts of swimming pool shells cannot be used.

Installation and Spacing

Multiple electrodes must be spaced at least 6 feet apart to prevent interference and ensure effective grounding. All electrodes must be bonded together to form a single grounding electrode system. Electrodes must not have nonconductive coatings such as paint or enamel, which can impede soil contact.

Conductor and Bonding Requirements

Provide a separate, insulated green ground conductor with each feeder and branch circuit, connecting the panel ground bus to all connected equipment. Bond all metal piping systems, enclosures, pull boxes, and conduit fittings to the grounding system using copper conductors. Use bolted ground connectors on all enclosures for disconnect switches, starters, pull boxes, and similar equipment.

Bonding jumpers must be installed across all expansion or deflection fittings to maintain continuity.

Resistance and Testing

The grounding system should achieve a maximum resistance of 25 ohms; if a single electrode exceeds this, additional electrodes must be installed and interconnected. Continuity tests and grounding electrode system resistance tests must be performed to verify proper installation.

Practical Considerations

Use high-quality copper-bonded steel rods or plates to prevent corrosion and ensure long-term reliability. Install a dedicated ground bar in the distribution box; avoid double-tapping neutrals to maintain a safe and effective grounding path. Ensure all connections are mechanically secure and electrically continuous to provide a low-impedance path for fault currents.

By following these specifications, distribution boxes will have a safe, code-compliant grounding system that stabilizes voltage, protects equipment, and reduces the risk of electrical shock or fire.
