Where is the network cable splitter

A network cable splitter allows one Ethernet cable to carry two separate connections, effectively sharing a single cable between two devices under specific conditions.

How It Works

An Ethernet splitter, also called a LAN splitter, divides the wire pairs inside a standard Ethernet cable into separate channels. Standard CAT5e or CAT6 cables contain four twisted pairs, but 10/100 Mbps Ethernet only uses two pairs. The splitter allocates different pairs to different ports, allowing two devices to share a single cable.

For example, one 1000 Mbps cable can be split into two 100 Mbps connections.

Key Considerations

Bandwidth Limitation: Traditional splitters do not increase total bandwidth; they share the existing connection. Each device may be limited to 100 Mbps unless using a modern Gigabit splitter.

Two-

Sided Setup: To function properly, a splitter must be used at both ends of the cable—one to split and one to recombine the connections. Not a Switch: Unlike an Ethernet switch, a splitter cannot manage traffic or provide full-duplex communication. It simply divides the cable physically.

Use Cases

Limited Ports: Useful when only one Ethernet drop is available but two devices need a wired connection. Temporary Installations: Ideal for short-term setups or low-bandwidth environments. Space Efficiency: Reduces the need for running additional cables in tight spaces.

Alternatives

Ethernet Switch: A small unmanaged switch can provide multiple ports with full bandwidth management, often a better long-term solution than a splitter.

Po

E Splitter: Separates power and data from a PoE cable to power non-PoE devices without a local adapter. Powerline or MoCA Adapters: Use existing electrical or coaxial wiring to extend network connections without running new Ethernet cables.

Popular Products

Examples include the TP-Link EH210 1-to-2 Gigabit LAN Splitter and UGREEN 1-to-2 Gigabit Ethernet Splitter, which are plug-and-play and compatible with routers, switches, and devices like PCs, TVs, and gaming consoles. In summary, a network cable splitter is a convenient tool for sharing a single Ethernet cable between two devices, but for higher speeds, multiple devices, or long-term setups, an Ethernet switch or other alternatives may be more effective.
