Three-layer optical cable

Fiber optic cables consist of three main layers: core, cladding, and coating, each essential for efficient light-based data transmission.

Core

The core is the innermost layer of a fiber optic cable where light signals travel. It is typically made of ultra-pure glass or specialized plastic with a high refractive index, which allows light to propagate with minimal loss. In single-mode fibers, the core is very small, allowing only one light beam to pass, ideal for long-distance transmission.

Multimode fibers have a larger core that supports multiple light beams, suitable for shorter distances.

Cladding

Surrounding the core is the cladding, which has a slightly lower refractive index than the core. Its primary function is to reflect light back into the core using the principle of total internal reflection, preventing signal loss and keeping the light confined within the core. This ensures that data signals remain strong and coherent as they travel through the fiber.

Coating

The coating is the outer protective layer that shields the core and cladding from physical damage, moisture, and environmental stress. It is usually made of durable materials such as plastic or Kevlar fibers. Some fibers have a primary soft coating to cushion the glass and a secondary hard coating for mechanical protection.

This layer also helps maintain the fiber's structural integrity during installation and handling.

How the Layers Work Together

The three layers operate in harmony: the core transmits light, the cladding keeps the light contained, and the coating protects the fiber from external damage. This combination allows fiber optic cables to carry large amounts of data at high speeds over long distances, making them ideal for telecommunications, internet, and cable networks.

Additional Notes

Fiber optic cables can be bundled into loose-tube or tight-buffer designs, often including strength members like aramid yarn or steel to prevent bending and breakage. The precise construction and layering are guided by standards from organizations such as TIA and ITU, ensuring reliable performance across different applications.
