Cold splicing test of fiber optic cable

Cold splicing allows fiber optic cables to be joined without fusion, and testing ensures the splice maintains low loss and signal integrity. What is Cold Splicing? Cold splicing, also known as mechanical splicing, is a method of joining two fiber optic cables without using heat or fusion.

Instead, the fibers are precisely aligned and held together using a mechanical fixture and an index-matching gel to minimize light loss and back reflection. This method is commonly used for emergency repairs, temporary connections, or when fusion splicing equipment is unavailable.

Cold Splicing Procedure

Prepare the Fiber Ends: Strip the protective coating carefully using a fiber stripper, exposing the bare glass fiber. Clean the fiber ends thoroughly with lint-free wipes and 99%+ isopropyl alcohol to remove dust, oil, or other contaminants. Cleave the Fiber: Use a precision fiber cleaver to create a flat, perpendicular end face.

Proper cleaving is critical to reduce insertion loss and ensure a smooth splice. Insert into Mechanical Splice: Place the cleaved fibers into the mechanical splice holder. Apply index-matching gel to the fiber ends to reduce reflection and improve light transmission.

Secure the Splice: Lock the fibers in place using the splice assembly. Ensure the fibers are aligned precisely to avoid microbends or misalignment that can increase loss. Protect the Splice: Cover the splice with a protective sleeve or enclosure to prevent physical damage and environmental exposure.

Testing Cold Splices

After completing a cold splice, it is essential to verify the splice quality using standard fiber optic testing methods: Optical Loss Test Set (OLTS): Measures the total insertion loss across the splice to ensure it meets network specifications.

Optical Time-

Domain Reflectometer (OTDR): Detects splice loss, reflections, and any microbends along the fiber.

OTD

R testing is particularly useful for identifying weak or misaligned splices. Visual Fault Locator (VFL): Uses visible light to check for breaks, cracks, or misalignment in the splice. A typical cold splice should have an insertion loss of around 0.

3 dB, slightly higher than a fusion splice, which usually achieves 0. 1 dB loss.

Best Practices

Always re-clean fiber ends if splicing multiple fibers in sequence to maintain low-loss performance. Use anti-static precautions in dry environments to protect fiber and splicer electronics. Verify each splice with OTDR or OLTS before integrating it into the network to ensure reliable performance.

Cold splicing is a practical solution for field repairs and temporary connections, but careful preparation, alignment, and testing are crucial to maintain network integrity and minimize signal loss.
