Commonly used fiber optic patch cord models

The most commonly used fiber optic patch cords are single-mode OS2 and multimode OM3/OM4 with LC or SC connectors, typically in duplex configuration for data center and enterprise applications. Fiber TypesSingle-Mode Fiber (SMF): OS2 is the standard for long-distance and high-bandwidth applications, such as metro networks, telecom backbones, and campus networks. It has a small core (~8–10 µm) and supports one light mode, minimizing signal loss over long distances.

Multimode Fiber (MMF): OM3 and OM4 are widely used in data centers and short-distance intra-building links. OM3 (aqua jacket) supports up to 10–100 Gbps over 300 meters, while OM4 extends reach to 400 meters at high speeds. OM1 (orange) and OM2 (orange) are largely legacy and less common today.

OM5 (lime green) is emerging for high-speed, wideband applications. Connector TypesLC (Lucent Connector): Small form factor, duplex, most common in modern data centers, compatible with QSFP and SFP transceivers.

S

C (Subscriber Connector): Larger, duplex, often used in legacy systems and telecom networks.

S

T (Straight Tip): Bayonet-style, mostly found in older installations. MPO/MTP: Multi-fiber connectors for high-density applications, often used in backbone or spine-leaf data center architectures.

Cable Configurations

Duplex: Two fibers (transmit and receive), standard for most point-to-point connections in data centers. Simplex: Single fiber, used for unidirectional links or BiDi transceivers. Armored: Provides protection against crushing or rodent damage, used in harsh environments.

Bend-

Insensitive Fiber: G. 657A1/A2 for single-mode, allows tight bends without signal loss, ideal for FTTH or high-density racks. Jacket TypesPVC: Basic indoor use, not suitable for air ducts.

Plenum (OFNP): Fire-resistant, safe for air ducts. Riser (OFNR): For vertical shafts between floors.

LSZ

H (Low Smoke Zero Halogen): Emits minimal smoke/toxic gas, common in Europe and high-safety areas.

Summary

For most modern data center and enterprise networks, the typical patch cord model is a duplex LC-LC OM3 or OM4 multimode cable for short intra-rack or inter-rack connections, and single-mode OS2 LC-LC for longer links or telecom applications. Emerging setups may use OM5 or MPO/MTP for high-density, high-speed deployments. Proper selection depends on distance, bandwidth, connector compatibility, and environmental requirements.
