Connection of fiber optic sensor

Connecting a fiber optic sensor involves preparing the surface, bonding the fiber with suitable adhesive, routing it properly, and linking it to the measurement system for accurate readings. Step 1: Understand Your Sensor TypeFiber optic sensors can be plastic or glass fibers, with different diameters and operating temperature ranges. Plastic fibers are flexible and cost-effective, while glass fibers can withstand higher temperatures and are often encased in protective tubing.

Sensors may be thru-beam (transmitter and receiver) or reflective (single unit) depending on your application. Step 2: Prepare the SurfaceProper surface preparation is crucial for accurate measurements: Clean the surface to remove dust, grease, or debris. Abrade or lightly sand the area to improve adhesion.

Condition or neutralize the surface if required by the adhesive. Step 3: Select and Apply AdhesiveUse adhesives compatible with fiber optic sensors, such as M-Bond 200 epoxy or AE-10, which provide strong adhesion and suitable temperature ranges. Apply the adhesive evenly along the planned sensor route.

For temporary or non-critical applications, double-sided tape can be used, though it is less reliable than epoxy. Step 4: Plan and Route the FiberDetermine the sensor path along the surface, avoiding sharp bends or stress points. Ensure strain relief at connection points to prevent fiber damage.

For distributed strain measurements, maintain consistent spacing and alignment along the fiber. Step 5: Bond the FiberCarefully place the fiber onto the adhesive-coated surface. Press gently to ensure full contact without damaging the fiber.

Allow the adhesive to cure fully according to manufacturer instructions before applying any load or connecting to equipment. Step 6: Protect the FiberApply a protective layer, such as RTV silicone, over the bonded fiber to shield it from environmental effects like moisture, temperature changes, or mechanical abrasion. Step 7: Connect to Measurement EquipmentLink the fiber to the light source and detector or the data acquisition system.

Ensure proper alignment and secure connections to avoid signal loss. Verify the system is reading correctly and calibrate if necessary. Optional: Embedment in MaterialsFor applications like concrete or composites, fibers can be embedded by placing them in grooves or casting them into the material.

Shallow grooves are recommended for surface-level measurements, while deeper embedment requires careful consideration of environmental effects. By following these steps, you can ensure a reliable connection and accurate measurement from your fiber optic sensor system. Proper installation, routing, and protection are key to maintaining sensor performance over time.
