Stranded Optical Cable Structure

A stranded optical cable consists of multiple fiber-containing tubes helically wound around a central strength member, providing flexibility, mechanical protection, and high fiber capacity.

Core Structure

The heart of a stranded optical cable is its cable core, which contains the optical fibers. In stranded designs, multiple loose or semi-tight buffered tubes are helically wound around a central strength member, often made of fiberglass-reinforced plastic (FRP) or steel, to provide tensile strength and prevent fiber elongation during installation or environmental stress. Each tube typically contains several optical fibers, sometimes arranged in ribbons for high-density applications.

The helical stranding ensures that fibers can move slightly within the tubes, reducing stress from bending or stretching.

Fiber Protection

Each optical fiber is coated with a primary protective layer, usually a polymer such as acrylate or polyimide, which shields the glass core from mechanical damage and moisture. In loose tube designs, the fibers are free to move within the tube, often surrounded by gel or water-blocking materials to prevent water ingress. Semi-tight buffered tubes, like FlexTubes™, use a soft buffer material that allows high fiber density while maintaining flexibility and ease of splicing.

Stranding and Matrix Formation

In stranded optical cables, the tubes are arranged in a layered, helical pattern around the central member. This stranding provides torsion resistance, lateral pressure resistance, and flexibility. For ribbon-based designs, multiple fiber ribbons are stacked to form a fiber ribbon matrix, which is then enclosed in the protective tubes.

The matrix dimensions determine the tube size and overall cable diameter.

Outer Protection

The cable core is surrounded by strength members and jacketing layers. Strength members, such as FRP rods, bear tensile loads, while the outer jacket, typically made of polyethylene or PVC, protects against environmental factors like moisture, UV radiation, and mechanical abrasion. Some cables include armoring for additional protection in harsh outdoor environments.

Advantages of Stranded Design

Flexibility: Helical stranding allows the cable to bend without stressing the fibers. High fiber count: Multiple tubes or ribbons enable dense fiber packing. Environmental resistance: Water-blocking gels and robust jackets protect fibers in outdoor or underground installations.

Ease of installation and splicing: Semi-tight buffered tubes simplify handling and fiber identification.

Applications

Stranded optical cables are widely used in long-distance telecommunications, FTTH networks, and outdoor backbone deployments, where mechanical strength, environmental protection, and high fiber capacity are critical. In summary, a stranded optical cable combines helically stranded fiber tubes, a central strength member, protective layers, and an outer jacket to ensure reliable, high-speed data transmission while maintaining flexibility and durability in diverse installation environments.
