Optocoupler-driven operational amplifier

An optocoupler-driven operational amplifier uses an optocoupler to provide galvanic isolation while transferring a signal, with feedback from a photodiode ensuring linearity and accurate amplification.

Basic Concept

An optocoupler consists of an LED on the input side and a photodetector (phototransistor or photodiode) on the output side, separated by an optical barrier to provide electrical isolation. When current flows through the LED, it emits light that activates the photodetector, generating a proportional current on the output side. This allows DC or AC signals to be transmitted across isolated circuits without direct electrical connection.

Driving an Operational AmplifierIn an optocoupler-driven op-amp, the photodetector output is connected to the op-amp input, often in a feedback configuration. The IL300 optocoupler is a common example, where two PIN photodiodes are used: one for servo feedback and one for the output signal. The servo photodiode monitors the LED flux and adjusts the LED current to linearize the response, compensating for temperature variations and LED nonlinearity.

The output photodiode then produces a current that accurately tracks the input signal, which is fed into the op-amp to maintain precise amplification.

Key Features

Galvanic Isolation: The LED-photodiode barrier prevents high voltages or noise from affecting the op-amp input, protecting sensitive circuits. Linearity: Feedback from the servo photodiode ensures that the output current is proportional to the input signal, minimizing distortion. Bandwidth and Stability: Properly designed optocoupler-driven op-amps can achieve high common-mode rejection, wide bandwidth, and stable gain, suitable for industrial sensors, medical transducers, and isolated power supply feedback.

Applications: These circuits are used in isolated measurement systems, precision analog signal transmission, and situations where safety or noise immunity is critical.

D light intensity is proportional to the input signal. Servo photodiode monitors LED flux and adjusts current to maintain linearity. Output photodiode generates a current proportional to the input.

Op-amp receives the photodiode current and amplifies it, providing an isolated, accurate output. This principle allows accurate, isolated signal amplification without the complexity of transformers or digital isolation schemes, making it ideal for precision analog applications.
