Optical Module Input and Output

The input of an optical module is the electrical signal entering the transmitter (TOSA), while the output is the optical signal emitted by the transmitter or the electrical signal from the receiver (ROSA).

Understanding the Transmitter and Receiver

Transmitter (TOSA): The transmitter side converts electrical signals into optical signals. It contains a laser diode (LD) or LED, a driver circuit, and an optical interface. The electrical input enters the driver chip, which modulates the light source to emit optical signals through the fiber optic connector.

Receiver (ROSA): The receiver side converts incoming optical signals back into electrical signals. It contains a photodetector, preamplifier, and electrical interface. The optical signal from the fiber enters the photodetector, which generates a corresponding electrical output.

Physical and Visual Cues

Labeling: Most optical modules have labels indicating TX (transmit) and RX (receive) ports.

T

X is the output of the transmitter, and RX is the input to the receiver. Connector Orientation: Some modules, like QSFP+, have a top side with an L-shaped notch to ensure correct insertion. The transmitter and receiver sides are aligned according to the module's orientation.

Dust Plugs: Often, the transmitter port may have a colored dust plug (e.g., blue for single-mode) to indicate the optical output, while the receiver port may have a different color. Internal Structure: If visible, the laser diode indicates the transmitting side, and the photodetector indicates the receiving side.

Practical Tip

When connecting optical modules, always match the TX of one module to the RX of the other to ensure proper signal flow. Misalignment can prevent communication or damage the module. Additionally, consult the module datasheet for port identification, as some modules may have non-standard layouts.

By combining labeling, connector orientation, and knowledge of internal components, you can reliably distinguish the input and output of an optical module.
