Methods and Processes for Laying Optical Cables in Ducts

Optical cables in ducts are installed using careful preparation, proper handling, and either pulling or blowing methods, following strict guidelines for tension, bend radius, and duct fill ratio.

Pre-

Installation Preparation

Route Survey: Conduct a thorough survey of the cable route to identify potential obstacles, manhole locations, and splice points. Determine drum placement, cable storage, and machinery requirements, and obtain necessary work permissions. Cable Inspection: Inspect cable drums for physical damage and test fibers for continuity and attenuation before installation.

Work Area Setup: Ensure manholes are clean, work areas are signposted, and all handling equipment is available. Barricades or traffic cones should be used to prevent interference from vehicles or pedestrians.

Cable Handling

Avoid bending the cable below its minimum bend radius, twisting, or applying excessive tension. Use special lubricants if necessary and leave cable reserves in a figure-eight or circular shape to prevent kinking. For long cable lengths, the figure-eight coil should be approximately 15 ft (4.

5 m) with loops 5–8 ft (1. 5–2. 4 m) in diameter.

Installation Methods

Pulling Method

The cable is manually or mechanically pulled through the duct using traction rollers or a hydraulic power pack. Maximum pulling tension must not exceed the cable's rated limit, and care must be taken to avoid stress on the fibers. Suitable for shorter ducts or when machinery for blowing is unavailable.

Blowing (Jetting) MethodA combination of mechanical pushing and high-speed compressed air is used to float the cable through the duct. A piston may be attached to the cable front to reduce friction and control movement. Preferred for longer ducts with multiple bends, as it reduces installation time, manpower, and mechanical stress on the cable.

Key parameters include the Duct Fill Ratio (DFR), which should be maintained between 35–65% for optimal performance.

DF

R is calculated as the ratio of the cable cross-sectional area to the duct inner area.

Splicing and Connections

Splice protectors should be used, and sufficient cable reserves left at splice points. Connections to distributors or equipment should be made with pigtails or patch cords. Only fibers involved in splicing should be handled; unused fibers should remain protected.

Safety and Environmental Measures

Follow all local regulations and obtain necessary authorizations before starting work. Implement a security plan, proper signage, and environmental precautions during installation. Ensure personnel are trained in cable handling and aware of maximum tension and bend radius limits.

Post-InstallationVerify cable integrity and continuity after installation. Document cable routes, splice locations, and any deviations from the plan. Clean and secure manholes, and ensure all cable reserves are properly stored.

By following these steps, optical fiber cables can be safely and efficiently installed in ducts, minimizing the risk of damage and ensuring long-term performance.
