Function of fiber optic welding disc

Fiber optic welding works by generating a high-energy laser beam and transmitting it through optical fibers to precisely melt and fuse metals.

Laser Generation

A fiber laser welding system begins with high-power semiconductor laser diodes that convert electrical energy into light. These diodes emit photons, which are then pumped into a fiber-optic cable made of silica glass doped with rare-earth elements like Ytterbium. The fiber acts as the gain medium, amplifying the light to form a coherent laser beam without the need for complex mirrors or alignment systems used in traditional lasers.

Light Transmission and Focusing

The laser beam travels through the core of the optical fiber, while the surrounding cladding ensures total internal reflection, keeping the light confined within the core. This allows the beam to be delivered flexibly to the welding head. At the welding head, focusing optics concentrate the laser into a microscopic spot, achieving extremely high energy density.

This precision enables the laser to melt only the target area, minimizing heat-affected zones and distortion.

Welding Process

Once focused, the laser beam melts the metal surfaces at the joint, creating a molten pool that fuses the materials together. The process can be controlled with pulse width, frequency, and beam wobble, allowing welding of thin materials, reflective metals like copper and aluminum, and complex geometries. The fiber optic delivery system also allows for flexible movement and integration into automated production lines.

Advantages

Fiber optic welding offers several benefits over traditional methods like MIG or TIG welding: High precision with minimal thermal distortionFast welding speeds and high throughputAbility to weld reflective and thin materialsReduced maintenance due to the absence of complex opticsSmooth, narrow weld seams with minimal spatter In summary, the fiber optic welding disc operates by converting electrical energy into a concentrated laser beam, transmitting it through optical fibers, and precisely focusing it to melt and join metals, providing high-quality, efficient, and precise welds suitable for industrial applications.
