Function of Relay Protection Coil

A relay protection coil operates on the principle of electromagnetism, where current through the coil generates a magnetic field that actuates the relay contacts to isolate faulty circuits.

Working Principle

The relay protection coil is essentially an inductor that responds to electrical quantities such as current or voltage in a power system. When a fault occurs, such as an overcurrent or short circuit, the current flowing through the coil increases. This current generates a magnetic field proportional to the magnitude of the current, which exerts a force on the relay's moving parts, such as an armature or disc, causing the contacts to close or open and trigger the circuit breaker to isolate the faulted section of the system (Electromechanical principle).

In electromechanical relays, the coil is connected to a current transformer (CT) or voltage transformer (VT), which scales the high system currents or voltages to levels suitable for the relay. The magnetic field produced by the coil moves the armature against a spring, and when the force exceeds a threshold, the contacts operate, completing the tripping circuit.

Key Features

Fault Detection: The coil senses abnormal conditions like overcurrent, earth faults, or voltage deviations. Electromagnetic Actuation: The coil converts electrical energy into mechanical motion to operate relay contacts.

Time-

Current Characteristics: Many relays are designed with a time delay, allowing temporary overloads to pass without tripping, while still responding quickly to severe faults. Integration with Modern Relays: In microprocessor-based relays, the coil's analog signal is converted to digital form via an A/D converter, and the relay logic determines tripping, often using Rogowski coils or linear couplers for precise current measurement.

Protective Function

The relay coil ensures rapid isolation of faulty sections, protecting transformers, generators, motors, and transmission lines from damage. By responding to the magnitude and type of fault current, the coil helps maintain system stability and prevents cascading failures. In summary, the relay protection coil operates by generating a magnetic force proportional to the sensed electrical quantity, which mechanically or digitally actuates the relay contacts to trip circuit breakers and protect the power system.
