How are diode lasers made

Diode lasers are made by constructing a semiconductor p-n junction with an active layer that emits coherent light when electrically stimulated.

Semiconductor Structure

Diode lasers are semiconductor devices similar to LEDs, built from materials like gallium arsenide (GaAs), gallium nitride (GaN), or indium phosphide (InP). The core of a diode laser is a p-n junction, where electrons from the n-type region and holes from the p-type region recombine in the intrinsic (undoped) active layer, releasing energy as photons.

Unlike LE

Ds, diode lasers include an optical resonator, typically formed by cleaved facets of the semiconductor crystal, which reflects light back and forth to stimulate further emission, producing a coherent, monochromatic, and directional beam.

Epitaxial Growth and Layering

The fabrication begins with an n-doped substrate, onto which the intrinsic active layer is grown using epitaxial crystal growth techniques. This active layer often contains quantum wells, which confine electrons and holes, lowering the threshold current and increasing efficiency. A p-doped cladding layer is then added, followed by a contact layer to allow electrical connection.

This double-heterostructure design ensures that both carriers and photons are confined in the active region, maximizing light generation.

Electrical Injection and Light Emission

When a forward bias voltage is applied across the diode, electrons and holes are injected into the active region. Their recombination produces stimulated emission, generating photons of a specific wavelength determined by the semiconductor's bandgap energy. The optical resonator amplifies this light, producing a highly directional and coherent laser beam.

Final Steps and Packaging

After the semiconductor chip is fabricated, it is cleaved into individual laser diodes, mounted on a heat-conductive package, and often coupled with lenses or optical fibers for practical applications. The packaging ensures thermal management and mechanical stability, which are critical for maintaining performance and longevity.

Summary

In essence, diode lasers are made by layering doped semiconductor materials, forming a p-n junction with an active region, and integrating an optical resonator. The combination of epitaxial growth, quantum wells, and precise electrical injection allows these compact devices to emit coherent, monochromatic, and highly directional light, making them widely used in telecommunications, data storage, medical devices, and industrial applications.
