Mechanical Fiber Optic Field Connector

Mechanical fiber optic field connectors enable fast, reliable, low-loss fiber terminations on-site without the need for polishing or fusion splicing.

Overview

Mechanical fiber optic field connectors are pre-polished, factory-prepared connectors that allow optical fibers to be terminated quickly in the field. They use mechanical splice technology to align the fiber cores precisely, often with a pre-cleaved fiber stub and index-matching gel to minimize optical loss and reflection. These connectors are compatible with single-mode and multimode fibers, and support various fiber diameters and cordage types, including 250 µm, 900 µm, 2 mm, and 3 mm.

Types and ExamplesFASTConnect® (AFL): Offers LC, SC, and ST connectors with tool-less, quick termination. Includes a translucent wedge for visual verification of proper fiber contact.

Fiber

Express (FX) Brilliance Universal Connectors (Belden): No-epoxy, no-polish, no-crimp design, supporting OM1, OM3, OM4, and OS2 fibers. Duplex clips hold TX/RX pairs together for easy installation. Fujikura FAST™ Series: Mechanical splice type connectors suitable for FTTH drop and indoor work.

Can be installed with basic tools like cleavers and nippers, providing low-loss, reliable connections.

Installation and Tools

Mechanical field connectors are designed for on-site assembly. The process typically involves: Stripping and cleaving the fiber to the correct length. Inserting the fiber into the connector with the pre-installed fiber stub.

Securing the connector using a wedge or clip mechanism. Verifying physical contact using visual indicators or a VFI (Visual Fault Identifier) in some models. Most connectors require minimal tools, such as fiber cleavers, nippers, and sometimes a simple fixture, making them ideal for rapid deployment in the field.

Applications

Mechanical fiber optic field connectors are widely used in: FTTH (Fiber to the Home) installations for drop cables and indoor terminations. Data centers for quick patching and maintenance.

Enterprise and LA

N networks where fast, reliable fiber terminations are needed. Temporary or emergency fiber deployments where fusion splicing is impractical.

Advantages

Fast and easy installation without polishing or epoxy. Low optical loss and reflection due to precise mechanical alignment and index-matching gel. Versatility across fiber types and diameters.

Field-ready with minimal tools required. Reliable and repeatable connections suitable for professional network deployments. Mechanical fiber optic field connectors provide a practical, efficient solution for on-site fiber terminations, combining speed, reliability, and compatibility with modern optical networks.
