Construction Standards for Mesh Cable Trays

Mesh cable trays must comply with material, structural, load, spacing, and installation standards to ensure safety, durability, and proper cable management.

Material and Construction

Mesh cable trays are typically made from high-strength steel wire, stainless steel, or aluminum, depending on environmental conditions and corrosion resistance requirements. Stainless steel trays often use AISI 316L for enhanced corrosion resistance, especially in chlorinated or marine environments. Aluminum trays are lightweight, corrosion-resistant, and suitable for indoor and outdoor applications.

Protective coatings such as galvanization or powder coating are applied to improve durability.

Dimensions and Spacing

Rung spacing: 6 to 9 inches (150–230 mm) is recommended to support cables and maintain proper bend radius. Tray width and depth: Selected based on cable diameter, number of cables, and future expansion needs. Tray fill capacity: NEC recommends keeping trays at 50% capacity or less to ensure airflow, prevent overheating, and allow for future expansion.

Load and Mechanical Requirements

Mesh cable trays must support the weight of installed cables and any additional mechanical loads. Standards such as NEMA VE 1 and CSA C22. 2 #126.

1 provide load/span class designations and structural requirements for metal trays. Trays should be installed to prevent sagging, maintain spacing, and avoid damage to cables.

Installation Guidelines

Mounting: Trays can be installed on ceilings, walls, or floors using appropriate support elements and mounting hardware. Bends and fittings: Horizontal and vertical bends, T-pieces, crossovers, and reductions must maintain cable integrity and proper routing. Separation of cables: Power and data cables should be separated to reduce electromagnetic interference (EMI) and comply with voltage separation guidelines.

Firestopping: When trays penetrate fire-rated walls or floors, approved firestop systems must be used to maintain fire-resistance ratings. Grounding and bonding: Mesh trays must be properly grounded and bonded according to NEC Article 392 to ensure electrical safety. Standards and ComplianceNEMA VE 1: Specifies manufacturing, load, and installation requirements for metal cable trays, including mesh types.

CS

A C22. 2 #126. 1: Harmonized with NEMA VE 1 for Canadian installations.

DIN E

N 61537: Defines cable support systems, including mesh trays, for European applications.

U

L 568: Covers construction and testing of nonmetallic and metal cable trays.

C

E marking: Indicates compliance with European directives for safety and quality. Mesh cable trays must be selected and installed according to these standards to ensure mechanical integrity, electrical safety, corrosion resistance, and compliance with local codes. Proper planning, material selection, and adherence to spacing and load requirements are essential for reliable cable management in industrial and commercial installations.
