Fiber Optic Receiver Switch

Fiber optic receivers with switches allow optical signals to be received and routed to multiple outputs or backup paths, supporting applications from industrial networks to CATV and digital audio.

Overview

A fiber optic receiver is a photodiode-based device that converts incoming optical signals into electrical signals. When combined with a switch, it enables routing of signals between multiple paths, providing redundancy, failover, or distribution to multiple devices. These systems are used in industrial Ethernet networks, CATV distribution, RF over fiber, and digital audio setups.

Types of Fiber Optic Switches

Mechanical A/

B SwitchesAccept inputs from primary and secondary fiber paths. Manual switching ensures a backup path in case of signal loss. Passive operation with no power required, extremely low insertion loss, and minimal back reflection.

Digital Optical Audio Switches

Designed for TOSLINK/SPDIF optical audio. Can support multiple inputs (e.g., 3x1 or 4x1) and outputs. Often include IR remote control for convenient switching between sources like PS5, Blu-ray, or soundbars.

Industrial Ethernet Fiber Switches

Combine SF

P fiber ports with RJ45 Ethernet ports. Support managed or unmanaged configurations, VLAN, QoS, and PoE. Suitable for long-range fiber connections in harsh environments.

Key Specifications to Consider

Data Rate: Receivers range from 40 kBd to 50 MBd or higher, depending on application. Wavelength: Commonly 650 nm, 660 nm, 820 nm, 850 nm, or 1300 nm for single-mode or multimode fibers. Connector Types: FC, SC, ST, LC, LC/APC, SC/APC, TOSLINK, or SMA depending on the system.

Transmission Distance: Varies from a few meters for audio applications to several kilometers for industrial or CATV networks. Power Supply: Some receivers are passive, while others require 3–16 V DC or AC power.

Applications

Industrial Networks: Fiber optic receivers with switches provide redundancy and failover for critical Ethernet links.

CATV and R

F Distribution: RF over fiber receivers convert optical signals to RF for coaxial distribution, supporting bidirectional communication and long-distance transmission. Digital Audio: Optical audio switches allow multiple sources to feed a single receiver or sound system without signal degradation. Backup and Redundant Systems: Rack-mounted A/B switches ensure continuous operation by switching to a secondary fiber path if the primary fails.

Example ProductsSwitchBox® Mechanical Fiber Optic A/B Rack Mount Switch: Duplex single-mode or multimode, FC/SC/LC connectors, passive failover. Thor F-RF-RX-MN-2: Compact CATV fiber optic receiver with dual coax outputs for RF distribution. LiNKFOR Digital Toslink Optical 4x1 Switch: 4 input to 1 output digital audio switch with IR remote.

HFBR-2522Z Fiber Optic Receiver: 1 Mbaud, 660 nm, general-purpose industrial receiver. By selecting the appropriate receiver type, switch configuration, and connector standard, you can design a fiber optic system that meets your network, audio, or RF distribution requirements efficiently and reliably.
