Fiber Optic Patch Cord Production Order Process

The production of fiber optic patch cords involves a structured sequence of steps from order verification to final testing, ensuring high-quality, customized cables for telecommunications and data networks. 1.

Order Verification and Material Preparation

The process begins with reviewing the customer's order to determine the required fiber type (single-mode or multi-mode), connector type (SC, LC, ST, FC, MTP), cable length, and jacket material (PVC, LSZH). Materials such as fiber optic cables, connectors, epoxy, and strain relief boots are prepared. Each cable is labeled with a process card to match the order specifications.

2.

Cable Cutting

Fiber cables, typically supplied on reels, are cut to the required lengths using automated cutting machines for precision and efficiency. Length tolerances are strictly controlled, often within ±3 cm, and pigtails shorter than 5 meters are cut into patch cords. The cut cables are coiled and secured with binding wires to prevent damage.

3.

Stripping and Identification

The outer jacket and buffer layers are stripped using jacket strippers and miller strippers, depending on the cable diameter (commonly 3. 0 mm, 2. 0 mm, or 0.

9 mm). Kevlar fibers are trimmed, and identification pastes or color codes are applied to distinguish duplex or multi-channel assemblies. 4.

Connector Assembly and Epoxy Injection

Connectors are assembled in a specific sequence: boot → jacket ring → crimping ring → backpost ring → spring. Epoxy (e.g., 353ND mixed with a catalyst) is injected into the ferrule, and the cleaned fiber is inserted carefully. The assembly is then cured in an oven to secure the bond.

5.

Polishing and Cleaning

The ferrule end-face is polished using automatic polishing machines to achieve a smooth surface, reducing insertion loss and return loss. Ultrasonic cleaning removes any residual dust or debris. End-faces are inspected under a 400x microscope to ensure no scratches or contamination.

6.

Testing and Quality Control

Each patch cord undergoes insertion loss (IL) and return loss (RL) testing to verify optical performance. Interferometers may be used to inspect connector durability and alignment. Only cords meeting the required specifications are approved for shipment.

7.

Packaging and Shipping

After passing quality control, patch cords are labeled, packaged, and prepared for delivery according to the customer's order. Documentation includes length, fiber type, connector type, and test results to ensure traceability. This structured process ensures that fiber optic patch cords are high-quality, reliable, and customized to meet the specific needs of data centers, telecommunication networks, and LAN installations.
