Blocking cable tray firewalls

Cable tray firewalls are blocked using firestopping materials and barriers to prevent fire and smoke spread while maintaining code compliance.

Purpose of Cable Tray Firewalls

Cable tray firewalls are designed to maintain the fire-resistance rating of walls, floors, and ceilings where electrical cables pass through. Openings around cable trays must be sealed to prevent fire, smoke, and toxic gas from spreading between compartments, ensuring safety in commercial buildings, plants, and substations (NEC 300. 21).

Firestopping Materials

Common materials used for blocking cable tray firewalls include: Fire-rated boards and firestop packs for large openings Intumescent caulks and mastics that expand under heat to seal gaps Fire-resistant mineral wool for packing around cables 3M Fire Barrier Pillows, which are self-contained, intumescent, re-enterable, and provide up to 3 hours of protection These materials must be UL-listed and installed according to manufacturer instructions to ensure proper fire resistance.

Installation Guidelines

Prepare the opening: Ensure floor and wall finishes are complete, and shaft doors are installed. Install backing plates for large openings to support firestop materials. Pack firestop materials around the cable tray, leaving minimal gaps (less than 1 cm²) and ensuring a minimum packing thickness (e.g., 24 cm for large penetrations).

Seal edges and cover plates: Use square, evenly painted cover plates to close the opening and maintain fire integrity. Follow code requirements: NEC Article 392, NFPA 70, and NEMA VE 1 provide guidance on spacing, grounding, and barrier placement.

Maintenance and Compliance

Firestop systems should be inspected regularly for cracks or voids. Materials must be stored in a cool, dry place and remain traceable from manufacturer to installation. For retrofits or additional cables, re-enterable firestop products like 3M pillows allow safe removal and replacement without compromising fire protection.

By following these practices, cable tray firewalls can effectively block fire and smoke, maintain system integrity, and comply with international safety standards.
